For now, the fantastically unpredictable British weather is smiling down on hospitality businesses who have recently re-opened their (out)doors to customers after what seems like a lifetime, so it's time to get out and support our much loved Sudbury hospitality businesses.
Take a look below for our guide for who is now open for that long awaited alresco lunch date, dinner or drink in beautiful old Sudbury town.
People watchers paradise
Having not stopped serving some seriously delicious takeaway burgers, hot dogs, tapas, Sunday lunches and cheesecakes (these are pretty legendary) over the past three lockdowns many Sudbury locals have discovered The White Horse's excellent food over the past year. Even better is their fantastic friendly hospitality and with a newly refurbished beer garden to the rear and brilliant peope watching tables on North Street out front, this is a great spot for coffee, lunch, dinner or a pint. They have also received wide praise for their excellent Covid-19 measures and well trained staff, so if you're still feeling a little apprehensive - give The White Horse a call to book a table.
If, like me, you've missed the ancient art of people watching during lockdown you'll be thrilled to hear that Market Hill will be utilised by hospitality businesses for alfresco dining this summer. The newly named Lady Elizabeth have re-opened their covered courtyard space and once again have seating out on Market Hill. With their name change they also bring a brand new menu and it's looking (and tasting) pretty great.
The ever popular Prado Lounge re-open their terrace space this weekend (Sat 24th April) and on Saturday evening they'll be debuting their new extensive Market Hill outdoor dining area. With gluten free, vegan and kids menus and a pretty tempting cocktail offer, we look forward to seeing you on Costa Del Market Hill this weekend... Sudbury's Costa Coffee also has outdoor seating on Market Hill on non-market days for your well deserved caffeine breaks.
Just down the road on King Street, start the day right with an alfresco full english breakfast, tasty bacon sarnie or grab a slushy, tea or proper whippy icecream with the fantastically friendly team at Ree's Cafe.
If you're out enjoying Sudbury's beautiful riverside walks and water meadows you'll be thrilled to hear that The Mill Hotel have re-opened their terrace areas for outdoor dining. Not only a great spot for people watching but enjoy the sight of Sudbury's famous cattle grazing near the Mill Pond and look out for swans, egrets, herons, kingfishers and all kinds of wildlife on the meadows as you enjoy your tasty lunch or evening drinks.
Local legends David's of Sudbury have also re-opened a few outdoor tables at their massively popular Gainsborough Street cafe - prime people watching spot, especially on Market Days (Thurs & Sat). You can also still order a delicious bite for lunch from their takeaway menu.
Characterful courtyard cafes & restaurants
Courtyards don't come much prettier and breakfasts don't come much tastier than Painters Cafe's - whether its a 'ladies what lunch' date (they're fully licensed so treat yourself to a bottle of fizz), a coffee catch up or an afternoon tea treat this really is a great Sudbury spot.
Make a date at ALAZ's fantastic outdoor dining area, in a characterful corner of Sudbury's old town. Somehow they've managed to seamlessly transport the character of their brilliant restaurant outside and their delicious authentic Turkish Cuisine will have you coming back for more.
AG Lifestyle's Cafe has a lovely set up at the front of their temptingly beautiful lifestyle store on Station Road - enjoy your coffee and cake in this charming pocket of Sudbury.
Or you can still grab a perfect flat white at Bishop's Coffee and watch the world go by out front, don't forget macaroni cheese Saturdays. Just up the road on North Street, enjoy the fine hospitality and baked goodness of Twenteaone at their alfresco space to the front of their small but perfectly formed cafe.
You'll have to wait a little longer to dine in at many of our Sudbury favourites including The White Nettle (their shop area is open), The Secret Garden, The Codfather, Huffers Cafe, The Strawberry Teapot, Station Road - Social Eating House and newcomer to King Street Burger Amour. Many local cafes, restaurants and pubs are still offering takeway and collection services. Take a look at our hospitality category on Sudbury's Virtual High Street here to keep supporting local while their doors are closed.
Although The Brewery Tap's outdoor courtyard space is small, it is mighty, so its always worth a try to see if they have room at the (outdoor) inn. With a range of fine beers on tap, the highlights by brilliant local brewery Mauldon's - this is a proper local pub with proper local beer. No room at the inn? Mauldon's have a temporary po-up shop at The Brewery Tap so you can always take a taste of Sudbury home with you after you've sought out a spot at another local...
Just up the road on East Street you'll find the Horse & Groom, under new management and re-opening their garden this weekend we're excited to see the new owners have an extensively stocked gin bar and serving spirits by local company The Suffolk Distillery. Best of luck to the new management!
Much loved local The Prince have also re-opened their outdoor seating - don't forget to ring ahead to book your table and when restrictions allow we look forward this epic live music venue getting back to what it does best.
With extensive outdoor space overlooking the Sudbury's Water Meadows, tables in The Bay Horse's Garden are on a first come, first served basis. They have a pretty nifty drink ordering app or place your orders up front on arrival. Also under newish management, swing by The North Street Tavern's cosy rear beer garden for a crisp cold pint on a warm spring day.
