Sudbury Market Celebrations
Market Celebrations 2009
This year the Town of Sudbury is to celebrate over 1,000 years of Sudbury Market.
The British History online website, and the publication 'Gazetteer of Markets and Fairs in England and Wales to 1516', states that the date of inception of Sudbury Market was 1009, although, the Sudbury History Society and various other bodies believe that a market was present in the town prior to this date.
Planned celebrations commenced in June with a weekend of FREE celebrations.
On Saturday 6th June at 12 noon a parade of Medieval characters processed from the Delphi Club into the Town Centre, where the Mayor announced the start of the celebrations. The parade then processed back to the Delphi Club where entertainment took place until 5 p.m.
Sadly, Sunday 7th June was affected by two things. Firstly, the weather which was very unkind to us and secondly, the fact that the horse trailer belonging to the Jousting team broke down in Nottingham. Various displays and entertainment went ahead at the delayed time of 12.30 p.m.
