The Horse Trough
The Horse Trough or Drinking Fountain is situated in the centre of the town opposite the town hall, near to St. Peter's.
On the 26th March 2002 a plaque was unveilled on the Drinking Fountain by the then Town Mayor of Sudbury, Councillor Mrs. Dee Braham, dedicated to Dodie Smith, author of "One Hundred & One Dalmatians".
Both the Town of Sudbury and the Drinking Fountain were mentioned in the first edition of the book. To view the paragrah from the book and the plaque wording click here
Dodie Smith was born in 1896 and died in 1990 at the age of 94. She was married to Alec Beesley and for many years owned a house called the Barretts in Finchingfield, Essex.
The unveiling of the plaque commenced just after the church clock struck 12 midday (in the book it mentions that the clock was striking 12 midnight as the dogs drank from the fountain).
Amongst the guests attending the ceremony were Valerie Grove, author of "Dear Dodie", a biography of Dodie Smith, "Cruella De Vil" and "Pongo & Perdita" (see below).
